Four Chamber Music Ensembles Competed in Competition Held on Thursday, June 11 in New York City

June 12, 2009. The Walter W. Naumburg Foundation has announced the Trio Cavatina –comprised of Harumi Rhodes, violin; Priscilla Lee, cello, and Ieva Jokubaviciute, piano the winner of the Naumburg 2009 Chamber Music Competition. The prize will include a recital at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall to take place in 2010, as well as a composition to be written for them by Richard Danielpour.

Four chamber music ensembles competed in the competition that took place on Thursday, June 11 in Manhattan School of Music’s Greenfield Hall. Along with the Trio Cavatina, performing a 40 minute program for a jury that included eminent chamber musicians Robert Mann, Ursula Oppens, Carol Wincenc, Ronald Cope, Curtis Macomber, Anahid Ajemian, and Tom Sauer, were the Manhattan Piano Trio -- Milana Strezeva, piano; Wayne Lee, violin; and Dmitry Kouzov, cello; the Jasper String Quartet – J Freivogel and Sae Niwa, violins; Sam Quintal, viola; and Rachel Henderson, cello; and the Puff Quintet – comprised of Jennifer Christen, Sydney Braunfeld, Benjamin Moermond, Xiang Yu and Emi Ferguson.

Thirteen chamber ensembles were selected in the prescreening and all competing ensembles were asked to be in residence in North America, and all members were required to be under the age of 33 years old. All chamber ensembles were asked to provide three performance ready concert programs as well as proof of a concert career of three years or more. The competition was open to string quartets, piano trios and ensembles containing at least three members and not more than eight, without a conductor.

Mezzo-soprano Stephanie Houtzeel (October 18) who performed in our series many times, has recently accepted an engagement as soloist in the Vienna State Opera, starting in 2011.


Jacob Brink

Jacob Brink (5) with his parents: Charles Brink and Stephanie Houtzeel.
Stephanie, Marcy Rosen and Pei Yao Wang will open our 22nd season with a concert on October 18, 2009.
Charles Brink, music director of The Grand Tour Orchestra, will conclude the season on April 25, 2010, with a performance of C.P.E. Bach's Resurrection and Ascension.

Owen, Pei-Yao Wang's baby boy, was born on December 16, 2009.  Pei-Yao, Stephanie Houtzeel and Marcy Rosen joined in a concert of chamber music for voice, cello and piano that opened our 22nd season in October 2009.
